The Nigerian Navy has announced the successful interception of a large-scale arms smuggling operation in international waters off the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. The operation, conducted in coordination with naval assets from Ghana and Cameroon, resulted in the seizure of a converted cargo vessel carrying over 5,000 assault rifles, 2 million rounds of ammunition, and military-grade explosives.
The vessel, registered under a flagged convenience registry, was tracked for 72 hours using satellite surveillance and maritime drone patrols before being boarded by Nigerian special forces in a pre-dawn operation 180 nautical miles off the coast of Port Harcourt. All 14 crew members, originating from five different countries, have been detained and are undergoing interrogation by the Department of State Services.
Intelligence assessments indicate the arms cache was destined for militant groups operating in the Niger Delta, where a resurgence of pipeline vandalism and kidnapping-for-ransom has plagued oil production facilities over the past eight months. The seizure represents the largest arms interdiction in Nigerian maritime history and has been hailed as a significant blow to regional criminal networks.
"This seizure saved hundreds of lives," said Rear Admiral Ibrahim Suleiman, Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command. "Every rifle we keep off our streets is a family that does not grieve. Every round we confiscate is a community that sleeps safer."
The Navy has announced an expansion of its maritime surveillance capabilities, including the deployment of additional unmanned aerial vehicles and the commissioning of two new offshore patrol vessels funded by the federal security budget.
