Cybersecurity Authority Warns of Sophisticated Banking Fraud Surge

The Nigeria Cybersecurity Authority has issued a critical alert warning financial institutions and the general public about an unprecedented surge in AI-enhanced banking fraud. In the first quarter of 2026, over 200,000 customers reported falling victim to sophisticated phishing schemes that use generative AI to clone voices, forge documents, and craft hyper-personalized social engineering attacks.

The most dangerous of these new attacks involves AI voice cloning. Fraudsters obtain short audio clips of bank officials or family members from social media, then use AI to generate convincing voice calls that appear to come from trusted sources. Victims have reported receiving calls that perfectly mimicked their bank manager, their spouse, or even their pastor, urgently requesting fund transfers to resolve fabricated emergencies.

"These are not the crude scams of five years ago," said Dr. Adaeze Okafor, Director of the Cybersecurity Authority. "The AI can speak your dialect, reference your recent transactions, and adjust its approach based on your responses in real time. It is social engineering at a scale and sophistication we have never faced."

The Authority has mandated that all financial institutions implement real-time transaction verification via secondary authentication channels within 90 days. Banks are also required to deploy AI-driven fraud detection systems that can identify anomalous transaction patterns faster than human reviewers.

Public awareness campaigns are being rolled out nationwide, including SMS alerts, radio jingles in local languages, and educational programs in secondary schools. The Authority has also established a 24-hour fraud reporting hotline and is working with Interpol to trace the international criminal networks behind the surge.
