Lagos State Government has reported a 30% reduction in peak-hour traffic congestion following the full deployment of its AI-powered traffic management system across 200 major intersections. The system replaces fixed-timer traffic lights with adaptive signal control driven by computer vision and predictive analytics.
Smart cameras mounted at each intersection count vehicles, detect accident blockages, and identify illegally parked vehicles in real time. A central AI engine processes this data to dynamically adjust signal timing, extending green lights for congested approaches and shortening them for empty roads. The system also predicts congestion buildup 15 minutes in advance based on historical patterns.
Commuters on major corridors like Ikorodu Road and the Lekki-Epe Expressway have reported consistent improvements. Average travel times during morning rush hour on the Ikorodu-Island corridor have dropped from 2 hours 45 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes.
The AI does not get frustrated, it does not take bribes, and it works 24 hours a day, quipped a LASTMA official. Plans are underway to expand coverage to 500 intersections by early 2027, with integration into a unified smart city platform.
